In Wauconda D118, our mathematics instruction is centered on i-Ready Classroom Mathematics. This program focuses on building a deep understanding of math concepts through conversation and problem-solving. While traditional math might have focused on just "getting the right answer," i-Ready encourages students to understand the "why" behind the math, helping them become confident thinkers who can apply their knowledge to real-world situations. The i-Ready curriculum is designed around the idea that students learn best when they are actively involved in their learning. The program uses a consistent daily routine that builds classroom community and mathematical confidence.
Our classrooms are "talk-rich." Students are encouraged to explain their thinking, ask questions of their peers, and justify their answers. This helps move math from a solo activity to a collaborative one.
Every new concept starts with a problem for students to solve.
Try: Students attempt to solve a problem using any strategy that makes sense to them.
Discuss: Students share their different ways of thinking with a partner or the class.
Connect: The teacher helps the class see how all those different strategies lead to the same mathematical principle.
Students use "manipulatives"—like base-ten blocks, counters, and fraction tiles—to make abstract numbers feel concrete. This physical practice is essential for building a strong mental foundation in early grades.
One of the most powerful parts of the i-Ready program is its ability to meet every student exactly where they are.
The Diagnostic: Three times a year, students take a diagnostic assessment. This isn't a "pass/fail" test, but a way to see what skills a child has mastered and what they are ready to learn next.
My Path: Based on the diagnostic, each student receives a "My Path"—a series of online lessons tailored specifically to them. If a student is struggling with a concept, the path provides extra practice; if they are ahead, it provides enrichment to keep them challenged.
Data-Driven Small Groups: Teachers use the data from i-Ready to form small groups. This allows the teacher to provide targeted, face-to-face instruction to students who are working on the same specific skills.
