In Wauconda D118, we believe that emotional intelligence is a prerequisite for academic success and Learning for Life. Our Social Emotional Learning instruction is a partnership between students, staff, and families, anchored by the Second Step curriculum and the RULER approach from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. By teaching students how to navigate their emotions, solve problems, and build empathy, we create a safe, supportive environment where every child can thrive.
Developed at Yale, RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning. Students learn to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate their emotions, moving from reactive behaviors to intentional, thoughtful responses.
Second Step provides a consistent, grade-specific roadmap for developing social-emotional skills. Through interactive lessons and role-playing, students practice essential life skills such as empathy, emotion management, and executive functions like focus and self-control.
Our SEL framework ensures that students have the practical tools they need to maintain positive relationships and a healthy sense of self:
Bullying Prevention Unit: As part of our Second Step instruction, students participate in a dedicated unit on bullying prevention. They learn how to recognize bullying, respond to it safely, and become "upstanders" who support their peers and report concerns to trusted adults.
Integrated Skill Building: SEL is not an isolated subject; it is woven into the school day. Students use "Mood Meters" and "Classroom Charters" to check in on their emotional state and hold one another accountable for a kind, respectful learning environment.
Problem-Solving Skills: Students are taught a step-by-step process for resolving conflicts. This empowers them to define problems, brainstorm solutions, and evaluate consequences, turning playground or classroom disagreements into opportunities for growth.
